Visa (basic explanation)

Recently, Vietnam Travel Agency has received some questions about visa services in Vietnam. Thus, today, we write a post with the hope of providing basic ideas about it.

First of all, "A visa (from the Latin charta visa, lit. "paper that has been seen"), is a conditional authorization given by a competent authority of a country for a person who is not a citizen of that country to enter its territory and to remain there for a limited duration." (Wikipedia).

To make it simple, visa can be considered the identity card of a person when going to other countries for a period of time (canbe short or long).
Based on the method of issuance, there are two main kinds of visa:

  • On-arrival visa (also known as Visa On Arrival, VOA): granted at a port of entry. This is distinct from not requiring a visa at all, as the visitor must still obtain the visa before they can even try to pass through immigration.
  • Electronic visa: The visa is stored in a computer and is electronically tied to the passport number; no label, sticker or stamp is placed in the passport before travel.
Now in Vietnam, almost all travel agencies provide the visa services, especially the VOA one. Customers can choose the VOA service so that they don't need to worry about it any more.
